(movie review) “The Martian” : the Awesome Human Aspiration

The resolution to live, fight on and not give up.

Plus some sarcastic humour to destress.

These are the two sentences I ’d use to sum up the movie “The Martian” directed by the ever-enchanting (Sir) Ridley Scott, starring Matt Damon.

I was given a complimentary ticket from BFM radio for the preview of the movie before the premier on Thursday (that’s tomorrow!). I was half expecting the plot to be somewhat like ‘Gravity” (starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney) so I was quite prepared for much silence and prolonged reflective sessions during the 135 minutes movie.

On the other hand, having followed Matt Damon’s choice of scripts and roles, he can either craft a role so serious and brainy or the extreme end of humour sarcasm and brainy. I am glad that it was the latter this time round.

I am trying not to give away the story although the plot is no rocket science to begin with. Astronauts went on a Mars mission. Collect samples. Mayhem struck. Someone died (or so they thought) and how they turned every theory and convention upside down in order to save the man and NASA’s reputation.

Notice the humanity in a place hemmed in by bureaucracy and the excellent presence of Sean Bean in the movie.

This movie is highly recommended and reviews by the industry experts confirm it. It’s been a while since the wonder of space exploration is highlighted on big screen, bringing back the other side of humanity – the human aspiration to go beyond

So, bring along some popcorns and drinks – it’s a great ride indeed.
